Afterwork Torch-lit Reading tour with KUNCI
Saturday 22 April, start: 7pm
at Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society
In 2015, KUNCI Cultural Studies Centre took part in a residency program at Para Site in Hong Kong, where they organised Klub Baca Selepas Kerja together with Indonesian migrant workers. Klub Baca Selepas Kerja was a reading group of six sessions that explored the notion of reading, writing, working, time, space, and how these relate to the seemingly contradictory aspects of migrant workers’ lives, both as workers and writers. The project resulted in a publication entitled Afterwork Readings/Babasahin Matapos ang Trabaho/Bacaan Selepas Kerja.
In the framework of Maintenance Works, Cemeti invited KUNCI to present this project. Instead of just presenting the publication on a shelf, KUNCI reorganized some of the writings and presented them in different formats such as installation and text-display. They “show the work” in places within Cemeti that are decidedly difficult to access -the kitchen, the storage, under tables, in cardboard boxes- with the aim of invoking the idea of reading as a corporeal experience.
We warmly invite you to join the Afterwork Torch-Lit Reading Tour. Starting at 7pm, we will read fragments of the writings out load, while using torches to navigate our way through Cemeti’s dark gallery spaces. This will be followed by a de-installing of the project display. The reading will be recorded and will remain as a trace in the form of a weblink on KUNCI’s online Radio Kunci (here: http://radio.kunci.or.id).
